John P. Hinderlie

John was born April 17, 1943, in Tyler, Minnesota, to the Rev. M. Donald and Helen (Pederson) Hinderlie. He received a BA from Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, in 1965, and an MDiv from Luther Seminary, St. Paul, in 1972. He married Diane Steen in 1971. He was ordained July 15, 1973, in the American Lutheran Church. Pastor Hinderlie was remarried in 1995 to Diane Henderson.
Pastor Hinderlie served as a pastor of the Lutheran Church in West Germany from 1973 to 1977; as interim pastor of Gideon, Connell, Washington, from 1977 to 1978; assistant pastor of Bethel, Rochester, Minnesota, from 1978 to 1983; and pastor of First, St. Louis Park, Minnesota, from 1983 to 2005, when he retired. John did also serve as Visitation Pastor at Valley of Peace, Golden Valley, Minnesota, from 2015 to 2018.
Pastor Hinderlie is preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law Valerie Hinderlie, sister Mary Ager (Tryg); brother-in-law James Lamb. He is survived by his wife Diane; children, Peder (Tibby), Erik (Sarah), and Kersten Middleton; grandchildren, Lexi, Kallie, Beatrice, and Freja; great-grandchildren, Aniyah and Kylie; and siblings, Lois Hinderlie Lamb, Mark (Mary Byrne) Hinderlie, and Eman “Anne” (Kassem) Hassan.
Visitation will be on Sunday, December 16, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 6:00 at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens, 5125 West Broadway, Crystal, Minnesota. The funeral service for Pastor Hinderlie will be Monday, December 17, at 1:00 p.m., at Valley of Peace Lutheran Church, 4735 Bassett Creek Drive, Golden Valley, with visitation one hour before the service.
