Stephen transferred to Yale in 1963 from Carleton College, after preparing at Phillips Exeter Academy. He lived in Trumbull, pursued an intensive French major, and won both the Scott Prize in French and the German Book Prize in 1964. Stephen was awarded a Fullbright Scholarship for study in France. After returning to America, he earned an M.Phil. in French at Yale in 1970, graduating with honors.

Following completion of his studies, Stephen taught French at the University of Minnesota for four years, then studied art restoration in Italy. When he later returned to the United States, Stephen spent the rest of his life serving the Friends Society, both at home and abroad.

He died in Toulouse, France, on November 15, 2003, survived by his wife, Sylvie Davidson, Professor of Romance Languages and Literature at Dickson College in Carlisle, PA, two daughters, Sarah and Sophie, a sister, Margaret, and a brother, Bruce.
