Lamont Eldridge Smith II
Died November 29, 2001
Son of Lamont Eldridge Smith, Y’20S, Lamont prepared for Yale at Wichita High School East in Wichita, KA. His offering for our 25th reunion class book described himself as retired. It included an elaborate chart entitled A Brief History of My Time, covering facets of his life and events he found worthy of mention including the now-famous freshman posture classes, his coming out and a favorite cocktail recipe: “1/3 Bacardi, 1/3 cognac and 1/3 Nyquil, not shaken.”
Later in life Lamont lived in North Harwich, MA and worked in management at the Cape Playhouse in Dennis, MA, Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, RI and in development at the Boston Opera Company. He was a member of the Yale Club of Cape Cod and the University Club in Providence and enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles and his computer.
Lamont died peacefully in his sleep at 58 on November 29, 2001 as the result of complications from lung cancer, survived by his partner of 36 years, Stevan B Little.
Murray Horwitz remembers:
Monte and I were roommates at Yale. After he left Yale, he came out as a gay person, something I did not know while rooming with him. He was involve with the Arts on Cape Cod. We maintained contact through the years. In the 1980s I, with my wife and two sons, went to the Cape and stayed with him and his partner.
