Henry St. George “Saint” Tucker III, 81, a lifelong Richmond resident and beloved hematologist and oncologist, passed away on Friday, May 16th. Saint was known for his dedication to his family and friends and his compassionate approach to medicine, touching countless lives in the Richmond community.

A graduate of St. Christopher’s School, Saint went on to Yale University before earning his medical degree from the University of Virginia. His commitment to healing led him to residency in internal medicine at Cornell and Stanford Universities and fellowship in hematology at Tufts University, with a stint in the Public Health Service during medical school on a Navajo reservation, experiences that profoundly shaped his career. After returning to Richmond, he served on the faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University followed by community practice with the Virginia Cancer Institute.

He shared a 55-year marriage with Mary Davenport Guerry, a union built on shared passions for family, community, and global adventures. They cherished their time at his family farmhouse in Deerfield, Virginia, and her family’s retreat on Block Island, Rhode Island, both of which they shared with close friends each summer.

Saint was an avid adventurer, and at various points in his life could be found skiing the Rocky Mountains, canoeing the James River, and SCUBA diving Caribbean reefs. He cultivated deep and lasting friendships, maintaining strong bonds with childhood, college, and medical school friends, with whom he spent countless hours around the bridge table and chipping out of the rough.

Saint is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Peter St. George Tucker, Maria Tucker Frostic (Pete) and John Lewis Tucker (Ashley); his brother, Richard “Dick” Tucker (Ginny); and seven adoring grandchildren (Liam, Gavin, Elliot, Finn, Charlie, Shea, and Graham). He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for his quiet strength, gentle wit, and genuine care for others.

Donations may be made in Saint’s honor to St. Christopher’s School. A family burial and intimate celebration of his life took place in late June.
