David F. “Spike” Currier

David F. “Spike” Currier

David F. Currier died with his family on October 1, 2014. Born at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, NYC in 1943, Spike, as he was nicknamed by his family, grew up in New Haven & Buffalo Bay(Madison) amid a close-knit group of friends.

He graduated from Yale in 1967 and in 1986 from Pace University, where he earned an MBA, spending the bulk of his career working in both Connecticut & New York. With his loving partner & wife of 35 years, Barbary “Bo” Whalen, Spike lived in Stony Creek. The lifestyle allowed his blend of natural sociability with fierce independence, and he became a devoted “Creeker.” He had an analytic mind that he liked to sharpen with wide reading, games of setback, and crossword puzzles, and he relaxed to political folk rock.

He is survived by a son—Brendon “Maxwell” Whalen, of Stony Creek; two older sons and two daughters—David Currier, Ned Currier & Jane Cullipher, of Virginia; Cate Suzuki, of Delaware; three grandchildren; and four siblings. A cremation is planned, with private interment. A celebration of Spike’s life was planned for October 12 at 1PM at the Stony Creek Fife & Drum Corps, 215 Thimble Island Road, Stony Creek, CT 06405. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Willoughby Wallace Library, 146 Thimble Island Road.
